Confederation College opens new Paterson Library Commons
All learners will benefit from College’s new centre for information discover

(THUNDER BAY) September 27, 2007 - Confederation College officially opened the new Paterson Library Commons today as special guests joined Board members, students and employees at an unveiling ceremony in the College’s newly expanded Commons area in the Shuniah Building. Boasting state-of-the-art technologies and design, and encompassing two floors, the Paterson Library Commons is named in honour of the Paterson Foundation, which, along with other contributors, including our own generous student union, have donated to the development of the College’s new centre for information discovery.

“Our vision to reach out to every learner that wants a high quality college education, whether on-campus or online, becomes a reality with the opening of the Paterson Library Commons,” said Patricia Lang, President of Confederation College. “The Paterson Library Commons will enhance the College’s learning and teaching pathways – in, through and beyond – for students, employees, graduates and the community.”

The keynote speaker at today’s ceremony was Donald Paterson, speaking on behalf of the Paterson Foundation, which contributed a $500,000 donation toward the construction of the new Library. Other guest speakers included Hartley Multimaki, Chair of the College’s Board of Governors, Fred Stille, President of the Confederation College Foundation and Reg Galbraith of All Trades Contracting.

“Our decision to make this donation is the result of many years of support to Confederation College,” said Mr. Paterson.“

Senator Paterson, our Founder, had a lifetime interest in education. He would be delighted to see the results of his commitment to a perpetual fund for the benefit of the region he felt were responsible for his success. His delight would not be based on the bricks and mortar, but rather the excitement of providing young people and others in our region with so many different aspects of learning and communication activity.”

Pat Lang expressed her appreciation to the students of Confederation College for sharing this vision and donating $250,000 to the Advanced Technology for Learning Project. This project increases learning technology in the classrooms, creates a number of new, dynamic learning environments, brings a whole new suite of teaching tools to Confederations’ faculty and significantly enhances access to learning technology for our learners in Thunder Bay, throughout northwestern Ontario and beyond.

“The Student Union of Confederation College Inc. (SUCCI) is committed to student success and quality technology in our learning environment,” said Jon Hendel, President of the Student Union of Confederation College. “Today’s contribution of $250,000 to the Advanced Technology for Learning Project shows our commitment to ensure these important attributes are available and accessible for our students.”

Confederation College’s newest facility offers a full array of services, from virtual, 24/7 access within the college or from home to personal assistance by dedicated staff who offer library, academic, computer, research and technology skills.
“We provide a totally flexible learning environment for students or faculty to study, do research, collaborate with one another, practice presentation skills and access the best of the world’s resources,” said Laraine Tapak, Director of Learning Resources. “The public is invited to explore the new Paterson Library Commons. We are open seven days a week for those wishing to visit the Thunder Bay campus. Visitors around the World can check out what the library has to offer online 24/7 at www.confederationc.on.ca/library. It is truly a centre for information discovery and knowledge-sharing.”

ALL CANDIDATES DEBATE

The Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) along with Student Union of Confederation College Inc. (SUCCI) will be hosting an open forum for the provincial candidates in both local ridings on Thursday, October 4th, 2007 at the L.U. campus pub, The Outpost. The debate will have both ridings broken up to allow the individuals to be the focus rather than just the party. Thunder Bay-Superior North will be from 11:30AM. until 12:30PM, followed by the debate for Thunder-Bay Atitkokan, 1:00PM until 2:00PM. There will also be two brief presentations from Elections Ontario, explaining the proposed Mixed Member Proportional voting system and the time in between both debates is to allow all
candidates from both ridings to interact with students. Dr. Doug West of Lakehead University’s political science department will facilitate the event.

The first portion of the forum will give each party candidate a chance to introduce themselves and briefly discuss their platforms. Then there will be a debate on issues surrounding post-secondary education. Finally, there will be a half an hour devoted to question and answer.

Members of the media and the local community are encouraged to attend. This joint effort by LUSU and SUCCI is to bring students and post-secondary to the forefront in the upcoming election, as well as showing the strengths Thunder Bay will always have.

Confederation students will have the chance to watch the debate in the SUCCI Student Lounge. Students will also have the option in attending the event at the Outpost. If you have any questions for the candidates, please send an email to Jon Hendel (president@succi.com).
