Sustainability Commitment
Over the past 5 years, SUCCI has taken some great strides in making itself more ‘green’ and promoting green life initiatives with the students of Confederation College.
Some of the initiatives SUCCI is involved in are:
- Lug-A-Mug Campaign
Initiated in 2007, SUCCI launched this campaign to combat the large amount of coffee cups used on campus; 1200 cups a day to be exact. This mug costs you 10 bucks even, and gets you a discount at the coffee shops on campus. You also receive a punch card where the 20th coffee you purchase with the much is totally on SUCCI. Since the launch, SUCCI has sold over 500 mugs to the College & Thunder Bay Community. - Bullfrog Power
SUCCI is a proud member of Bullfrog Power (www.bullfrogpower.com). SUCCI offsets it’s electrical carbon footprint by purchasing wind & solar energy credits from BullFrog Power. - AquaCare
Bottled and spring water containers carry a large carbon footprint and SUCCI wanted to make a change. We have teamed up with AquaCareto offer students an almost carbon neutral alternative. The AquaCare water unit is available to students in the SUCCI Office in the Shuniah Building. Please feel free to come by and fill up your water containers with our delicious, clean, crisp, enviro-friendly water! - Student Environmental Committee for Sustainability (S.E.C.S)
A student led committee has been started on campus that SUCCI supports through Club Funding.
Green Life Tips for Students
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth
- Switch to organic shampoos and conditioners
- Get on your bike! -> For every mile you ride your bike instead of driving a car, you avoid the production of about one pound of carbon dioxide.
- Save water with powder detergents
- Buy only recycled paper products for your office, bathroom and kitchen
- Keep your water heater thermostat no higher than 120°F
- Replace 3 frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. This will save approximately 300 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $60 per year.
- Use your printer wisely
- Limit the use of disposable cups and plates
- Limit the use of paper napkins.
- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs -> Just make sure you dispose of them properly. They contain mercury which is horrible for our landfills. You can return burnt out CFL’s free of charge to any Home Depot location.
- Buy used clothing
- Buy Used Textbooks from our bookstore, student bulletin ads, amazon.ca, chapters.ca or anywhere else you can find them.
- Set up your computer enter sleep mode when you’re not using it.
